If Cobb County voters approve Sunday liquor sales this summer, there’s going to be a price and it looks like the county’s liquor stores will end up paying it.
There is nothing Utpal Patel likes about Sunday liquor sales.
“We’re not going to gain any extra business,” he said, speaking in the aisle where he stocks scotch, rum and gin. “It’s just going to spread out between Saturday, Sunday and Monday and you’re not getting any more revenue.”
Now, Patel and other liquor store owners will have to pay more for the privilege of staying open on Sundays.
Cobb voters will decide in July whether to permit Sunday liquor sales. While that will make it more convenient for customers, Patel says it’s a lose-lose proposition for stores like his – West Cobb Wine and Spirits.
Cobb County commissioners have decided to slap a $500 a year permit fee on liquor stores.
Commissioners say if owners don’t like it, then stay closed on Sunday. But Patel says that won’t work.
“If you want to compete, you gotta be open,” he said.
If Cobb voters approve Sunday liquor sales in July, the new law will go into effect in August.
Cobb County will charge liquor stores an additional $200 for the remainder of the year. The fee will increase to $500 in 2013.
