Q – Every heavy rain shower lately I see water that isn’t running into my gutters or water that is over-flowing from my gutters.
I have gutter covers on, what is the deal?
Neal – Kennesaw
A – Ahhh, the dreaded gutter cover clogged gutter story.
Here is an inside tip for you. Your gutters are clogged, or at least partially clogged.
Just because you have gutter covers on your gutters doesn’t mean that won’t still fill with gunk.
Side note – ‘Gunk’ is the correct word here. I would like to hear a better word for what you pull out of your gutter when you stick your hand into it.
You get some roof grit that gets in there, which creates a little catch for the odd leaf or bug or critters nest and the next thing you know – Gunk.
Even if you have gutter covers it is still a good idea to get your gutters cleaned and checked every so often. Water not going into gutters means extra water falling right into your foundation or water that is rotting the wood behind your gutters.
I do mine every other year.
Of course I don’t do it myself. I would if my one-story house in the front wasn’t a three story house in the back.
There is a correlation between how high up a ladder you are vs. how far you have to reach away from the ladder vs. how much longer you have until you are finished. Mine says ‘Hire someone’.
Here is the trick though. You need to hire someone that has a real company that has insurance and workman’s comp. Seriously. You don’t want to get some jack-boot hanging off a ladder up against your house.
It is a recipe for disaster. Don’t make it.
