ATLANTA — It was a big win Sunday for the Braves against the Dodgers at Suntrust Park. The 5-3 final made it two wins in the three game weekend series, over the team with the best record in the National League.

But that headline was competing with another one in the post-game lockerroom.

“Yeah, he didn’t run. You gotta run, you gotta…it’s not going to be acceptable here.” That’s what Braves’ manager Brian Snitker said of young star outfielder Ronald Acuna, Jr.

In the 3rd inning, Acuna hit a long drive to right field. Thinking it was a home run, Acuna was slow to run down to first base, instead admiring the drive. His hit bounced off the right field wall. Instead of at least a double, Acuna had to settle for a single.

“As a teammate, you’re responsible for 24 other guys, and that name on the front is a lot more important than the name on the back…that jersey,” said Snitker. The next inning, he followed Acuna into the tunnel off the dugout for a conversation. “It was mature, like he owned up to it. I know he knows he screwed up, and good for him.”

By the 5th inning, Acuna had been replaced in the outfield by Adam Duvall.

In the Braves clubhouse after the game, Acuna was asked about his manager’s decision to pull him from the game. “He (Snitker) just sat me down and told me the reason this is happening is you didn’t run that one out. There’s no excuse for it so I just kind of took it and said of course. He’s the manager, I’m the player. I will ultimately respect his decisions,” said Acuna.

Snitker says his move was only for Sunday’s game. Acuna would be expected to be back in the starting lineup for the Braves’ next game Tuesday.

As for the Braves over the weekend, it was indeed a notable performance in beating the Dodgers two times in three tries. It was the first time the Braves have beaten Los Angeles in a series since 2015.

Big picture, the Braves lead the NL East by 5.5 games over the Washington Nationals.
