Feeling like Spring! Warming to record highs this week as temperatures bounce into the 70s

Round out the second half of February, it is just 3 weeks until we “Spring Forward”, and 4 weeks until the First Day of Spring!

Although it’s gonna be close to 80 degrees this week... So I guess Spring already Sprung!

Why so warm this week?

High pressure over the Atlantic Ocean near Florida is pushing warm and humid air into the Southeast. Even as clouds and light rain showers arrive throughout the week, temperatures will stay warm over the southern half of the nation, while cold air stays locked up in the Northern Plains and Great Lakes.

By the way, the all time highest temperature for February in Atlanta is 80 degrees, which happened three times before in Atlanta’s history:

  • 80 degrees on February 7, 2019
  • 80 degrees on February 26, 1996
  • 80 degrees on February 15, 1989

If you are like me, I am inspired to dig in the garden and get my spring and summer flowers ready to go! However, a warm February does not guarantee a warm March or April.

Be aware that the Blizzard of ‘93 brought feet of snow to Metro Atlanta in mid-March, and the early April Freeze of 2007 created billions of dollars in crop damage across the South.

According to data from the National Weather Service in Peachtree City (below), the average last Spring Freeze is March 23, but a freeze has been observed as late as April 25.
