The Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced the recall of about 53,000 LumaRail Bed Assist Rails.

A person can get trapped between the bed rail and the mattress or in the bed rail itself, posing a risk of death by asphyxiation, the CPSC reported.

An 81-year-old man in Pennsylvania died from positional asphyxia at his nursing home when he became stuck between his mattress and the bed rail.

The recall involves three different bed rails: Bed Assist Rail with Legs, model PHB4000; Free Standing Bed Assist Rail, model PHB6000 and the DoubleSafe Bed Assist Rail, model PHB7000D.

The bed rails were sold on Platinum Health’s website, as well as at Amazon, Walmart, eBay, Overstock and medical supply stores from July 2015 through December 20, retailing for between $65 and $100.

They are all made of white metal tubs with either a gray or black foam rubber grip handle. They may have a black fabric pouch. They have “Platinum Health” printed on a label affixed to the leg of the bed rail or grip handle, the CPSC said.

Consumers who have the bedrails should stop using them immediately and contact Platinum Health for a free repair kit. Those who use PHB7000D on a twin bed will receive a new bed rail designed for that sized mattress.
