SCRANTON, Pa. — A Pennsylvania man has been sentenced to at least 6 years in jail for stealing cash from an American Legion and for lying about his military service.
Christopher Crawford was found guilty of stealing more than $16,000 from the American Legion in Scranton, WNEP reported.
He also said he had been injured by a bomb in Iraq. He did not serve overseas, instead, he deserted shortly after entering boot camp, WNEP reported.
Crawford used the post's debit cards to make unauthorized purchases and ATM withdrawals without permission, Army Times reported.
American Legion Post 568 members noticed the issue when checks were bouncing, WOLF reported.
But it wasn't only the money that hurt the former military members. The post commander told WOLF that it was the stolen valor aspect that angered him.
Crawford was found guilty of 11 charges including nine felonies and two misdemeanors, Army Times reported.
