ATLANTA — Friday is expected to be a busy travel day across metro Atlanta as spring break begins for many school districts beginning on Monday.
By air and by car, travelers are hitting the road and heading to the airport, with heavier traffic expected starting around lunchtime and continuing into the afternoon.
At Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Friday is projected to be the busiest travel day of the month, with more than 94,000 travelers expected to pass through TSA security checkpoints.
Airport officials say about 8.3 million passengers are expected to travel through the airport in April.
On the roads, the Georgia Department of Transportation says drivers should expect heavy traffic on surface streets beginning late Friday morning and continuing into the afternoon. Highway traffic in the metro area is expected to increase around midday Friday and continue through Sunday.
GDOT also says drivers should expect heavy traffic around Macon and Savannah.
Return traffic is expected to begin next Friday.
Interstate lane closures will be temporarily suspended from Friday night through early Monday morning.
