New Year's Eve plans in Atlanta

Preps underway for Peach Drop 2014 This year, you'll notice a big change with the Peach Drop; it's a huge yellow peanut M&M, about three times the size of the peach, which has been the highlight of the Atlanta tradition for more than 20 years. (Channel 2)

After watching the Peach Drop, you might as well take a hike.

That's how park rangers across Georgia hope you start the New Year.  As part of the national "First Day Hikes" program, there are ranger-led hikes at a number of state parks New Year's Day.  The list is posted at GeorgiaStateParks.org.  Hikes range from easy and family-friendly to more rigorous climbs.

If not the woods, why not the water?  Lake Lanier serves as the site of the 18th annual Polar Bear Plunge in Gainesville.

The event benefits the Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club.  Prizes are awarded for best costume and biggest splash.

Swimmers and spectators then get to warm up at the chili cook-off.  For details, check lckc.org.
