It's a win for bike enthusiasts. Atlanta is one of just six cities to receive funding for better, safer bike paths.
The Green Lane Project from the group People For Bikes picked Atlanta over more than 100 other applicants. The other chosen cities are Boston, Denver, Indianapolis, Pittsburgh and Seattle.
The project will help the city construct new paths, separated from the regular flow of traffic by curbs, planters, posts or parked cars. The group says the new lanes cut down on bike and pedestrian injuries by as much as 50 percent.
Former cities to benefit from the Green Lane Project, including Memphis and Austin, will help with Atlanta's new bike path plans.
The group says it chose Atlanta because of its ambitious goals and community support to get the project done.
