MARK ARUM SHOW EXCLUSIVE: Praise for Atlanta from man whose family was attacked at MARTA station

Jerry Wenszell is heading to Atlanta from Milwaukee to be by his daughter’s side at Grady Memorial Hospital.

Following a tragic incident that happened at the Midtown MARTA station on Sunday, Katie Wenszell is in critical condition.

The 28-year-old and her mother Sue, along with four of her sisters, were sightseeing in Atlanta when Christopher Patrick Brooklin allegedly pushed her mother without provocation.

“There was no eye contact, verbal contact, nothing,” Jerry Wenszell told Channel 2 Action News. “The man just pushed her.” That is when Katie jumped and got her unconscious mother out of the way of the oncoming train. However, she could not save herself before the train hit and dragged her.

Jerry Wenszell tells WSB’s Mark Arum he is not surprised by his daughter’s actions. “They love their mom,” he says of all five of his daughters who were with his wife Sue that day. Wenszell adds that Katie’s actions reflect “what we’ve always known about her.”

Since the incident, Katie has undergone multiple surgeries. “Swelling on the brain,” he explains, adding, “They had to drill a hole in her head to relieve the pressure.”

She had part of her right foot amputated, her left shoulder torn off and is currently undergoing facial reconstruction surgery, the news station reported.

Brooklin, the 28-year-old man accused of pushing Sue Wenszell, is in the Fulton County Jail on charges of aggravated assault and battery, MARTA police told AJC.com.

The MARTA police report also said Brooklin “did not seem to understand what was being asked of him regarding the incident” and that he appears to have “some diminished mental capacity.”

GoFundMe page has been set up to help pay for Katie Wenszell's medical expenses.

As of Friday morning, donations have far exceeded the $5,000 fundraising goal with over $64,000 raised.

Wenszell says he could not be more grateful for the people of Atlanta who have donated. “I thank especially Atlanta, Georgia for the outpouring they have done... It’s just incredible.

“The outpouring of the people gives absolute hope that there is goodness in humanity.”
