An erupted water main spewed thousands of gallons of water high into the air near Georgia Perimeter College for hours Wednesday morning.
Dunwoody police said crews were working in the area of Tilly Mill and Womack roads Tuesday night and dug a hole exposing the pipe before they left for the night. The pipe burst around 1:45 a.m. Wednesday. It looked like the water had been shut off at 7 a.m., but Captain Herb said a helicopter-view showed that the bucket of a backhoe was being used to cover the geyser, but water was still flowing as of 8 a.m.
The water ran off into the parking lot of Georgia Perimeter College. With temperatures well below freezing, nearby fences and power poles are now covered with ice.
Police said the road was salted, but the road remains closed. Georgia Perimeter College said it will be open on Wednesday, with classes set to resume on Monday.
Students at nearby Dunwoody Elementary School will be transported to Dunwoody High School because the water main break left the school without water. Principal Jennifer Sanders and her staff have provided breakfast and water to the students. Students will be returned to Dunwoody ES for normal afternoon dismissal.
