ATLANTA — The U.S. District Court for Northern Georgia has dismissed a lawsuit from the Trump administration seeking unredacted copies of the state’s voter registration list.

According to officials, that includes social security and drivers license numbers, along with birth dates.

“I will always protect the sensitive personal information of Georgians, in accordance with the law and the Constitution,” Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger said. “I will not give in and break the law for anyone. Period.”

Raffensperger is calling it a major legal victory.

“The Court found that Title III of the Civil Rights Act does not preempt Georgia’s voter privacy law and that the Secretary can comply with federal law while protecting voters’ confidential information,” according to the Office of the Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger. “The Court further found that neither the National Voter Registration Act nor the Help America Vote Act requires disclosure of the sensitive information sought by the federal government.”

The Court agrees the state could comply with the government’s request while also keeping that information private.

Officials add the Court highlighted that Georgia’s list maintenance efforts demonstrated the Secretary’s compliance with federal election law.
