India cuts tariffs by 70%, marking a big win for Georgia pecan farmers

Georgia is the largest supplier of pecans

WASHINGTON DC — Georgia produces about one-third of all American pecans.

Recently, the farmers who are helping with this important Georgia export got a major win.

This past week, the Republic of India announced a major 70% cut to tariffs on U.S. pecan exports.

Tariffs have prevented Georgia pecan exports to this market of more than one billion consumers.

Sen. Jon Ossoff met seven times during the last year with India’s Ambassador to the United States U.S., Taranjit Singh Sandhu, to work towards this reduction.

Last month, Ossoff brought U.S. Trade Representative Ambassador Katherine Tai and the U.S. Chief Agriculture Negotiator Doug McKalip to Georgia to meet with farmers and representatives and briefed leaders on efforts to find a reduction in India’s high tariff.
