Grim milestone: Over 5,000 Georgians have now died of COVID-19

ATLANTA — Georgia reached a grim milestone Saturday as the number of people across the state who have died of coronavirus topped 5,000.

According to the Georgia Department of Public Health, 5,092 people have now died in Georgia from COVID-19 since the first death in Georgia was reported in March.

The number of cases reached 252,222 Saturday. The state has done 2,149,170 tests for 10.6% positivity rate.

Fulton County has reported the most fatalities with nearly 500 people dead. Gwinnett County is a close second with over 300 deaths reported.

Nearly 175,000 people have died of coronavirus in the United States, according to Johns Hopkins University. Georgia ranks 10th in overall coronavirus deaths.

The youngest person to die from the coronavirus was a 7-year-old boy in Savannah.
