Georgia mother wants answers after driver found with her son’s body in car let go

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. — A Georgia human rights group is stepping in to help a Georgia mother who is demanding answers in her son’s death and why the individual responsible was let go by authorities.

On January 29, Douglas County deputies pulled over an individual for traffic violations and dangerous driving on Thornton Road near I-20.

The driver, whose identity has not been released, had the body of 21-year-old Malachi Mitchell in the back seat.

“They discovered a deceased passenger inside of the car,” Douglas County Lt. Colonel T. Pounds said, according to WSBTV.

But, the driver was let go after questioning because he was “cooperative.”

Gerald Rose with New Order Human Rights says it appears that perhaps the driver has friends in high places and someone was covering for him.

“The boy might have known somebody and that’s why he was given special treatment.” Rose also said that the driver didn’t get stopped at the scene, but was actually directed to drive around the corner and into a dark area to proceed with questioning.

According to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, the District Attorney’s office approved the release of the driver.

“He admits of killing the young man, and we don’t understand why the police just let him go.” Rose said.

The mother of the victim, Kenya Mitchell, says she is upset that her son is dead and the driver was not arrested.

“In what country do you live in where you can be reckless driving and running through a red light with a dead body and not see one bit of no jail?” Mitchell asked.

The incident remains under investigation.
