Filming in Lawrenceville impacts roads and businesses

If you normally travel through downtown Lawrenceville, you better pick a different route for most of this week.

A DC Comics streaming series called Doom Patrol has three downtown streets tied up through Thursday.

Lawrenceville City Manager Chuck Warbington says Perry Street will be closed all four days while Crogan Street will be closed during non-rush hours and Pike Street only intermittently.

“We see it as a benefit. We’re also cognizant that it’s a disruption to some businesses at times, not just businesses on the square. So, we’re trying to be very sensitive to that,” he tells WSB’s Sandra Parrish.

Lawrenceville isn’t new to the Hollywood scene with episodes of Ozark and Sleepy Hollow filmed there in recent years. But Warbington says this Warner Bros. production is by far the largest.

“Being in the spotlight here is very important to our downtown area. It showcases what we already know--that we have something special here in the city,” he says.

Warbington says the city will see an economic boost of $2 million as a result of the project.

The road closures are expected to impact businesses around the square during the four days of filming.

Nancy Abuaisheh, owner of Nany’s Candy and Spices, says the company has offered business owners compensation during that time.

“I’m okay with a short-term slim loss of business. But I think in the long run this is going to be good for us,” she says.

Chris Collin, co-owner of Local Republic and Strange Taco, was looking for customers to fill his tables at lunch Monday. But he too thinks the production will be good for business.

“We’re hoping it brings tons of people down to the square and really puts Lawrenceville on the map. We’re excited about it,” he says.
