Fast Food Impacts Fertility

Fast Food Impacts Fertility BRISTOL, ENGLAND - FEBRUARY 20: In this photo illustration, fast food from a branch of McDonald's is pictured on February 20, 2018 in Bristol, England. The number of takeaway restaurants has increased significantly in the last few years and this has raised concerns that this can lead to over-consumption in cheap, unhealthy high-fat nutrient-poor food and drink leading to higher body weight and greater risk of obesity. Fast food could make it harder for you to become pregnant, according to a new study in the medical journal, Human Reproduction.

Researchers analyzed diets of 5,598 women and found those who ate fast food four or more times a week increased their risk of infertility by as much as 16 percent. Infertility is defined as not being able to get pregnant after one year.

Dr. Michael Randell, an obstetrician-gynecologist in Atlanta at Emory St. Joseph's Hospital says, "this certainly supports the notion that eating well is a healthy thing to do and now we see data showing it will help you get pregnant."

He says it's known that eating a well balanced diet you are less likely to be overweight and when you are overweight it can impact ovulation.

"Diet is always important and patients should be eating well prior to pregnancy so that they can continue that during pregnancy and even after, when they are breastfeeding," says Randell.
