COBB COUNTY, GA — An additional legal hurdle for prosecutors looking to carry out the death sentence for a man convicted of murdering two Cobb County realtors 23 years ago.

The execution warrant for 53-year-old Stacey Ian Humphreys expires on Wednesday, after a Cobb County judge stopped the execution last week.

Humphreys is on death row after being convicted for the murders of 33-year-old Cyndi Williams and 21-year-old Lori Brown.

Investigators said Humphreys attacked Williams and Brown while inside a Powder Springs real estate office, forcing them to remove their clothes and provide their bank PINs before shooting and killing them. He is also accused of taking their driver’s licenses and bank and credit cards.

At the time, officials said Humphreys was on parole for a felony theft conviction.

Legal questions raised by the defense in the last-minute appeal now need to be reviewed by the Georgia Supreme Court before another execution can be scheduled.

Last week, the State Board of Pardons and Paroles denied clemency in Humphreys’ case.

He was found guilty of murder and later sentenced to death in 2007.

Officials previously said Humphreys would be the first person executed in Georgia this year.
