Convicted murderer sentenced to life after initially being released by judge

July 17, 2014 Pamela Ballin is escorted out of court after her sentencing. DeKalb Superior Court Judge Mark Anthony Scott presides over a hearing Thursday, July 17, 2014 to decide whether to set aside the murder jury verdict of guilty of Pamela Ballin. Ballin was convicted last month of killing her husband, Derrick "Ricky" Ballin Sr. in 2009. Judge Scott sentenced her to a life term for the murder after denying motions for mistrial and directed verdict. The judge allowed Ballin to stay free after the jury declared her guilty last month of murdering her husband but then ordered her jailed after the public outcry. KDJOHNSON/KDJOHNSON@AJC.COM (Kent D. A woman who walked free after being convicted of murdering her husband will now spend the rest of her life behind bars.

In June, a jury found Pamela Ballin guilty of beating her husband, Derrick Ballin, to death. She claimed he was killed in a home invasion, but the jury apparently disagreed.

The judge sent Pamela Ballin home on a previous bond while he decided whether to issue a directed verdict, which is when the judge decides there's not enough evidence for a case to go to a jury.

"But to have a directed verdict issued after the jury has deliberated and, in fact, found someone guilty is extraordinary," District Attorney Robert James said.

In a hearing on Thursday, the judge upheld the guilty verdict and Pamela Ballin was sentenced to the mandatory life in prison. Her defense attorney has filed a motion for a new trial.
