A jury finds an accused rapist guilty in Cobb County, and the judge gives him the maximum sentence.

Craig Fields is sentenced to life in prison.  The jury found he'd raped a woman only 6 1/2 hours after being mistakenly released from prison in 2010.

Fields' victim was returning home from shopping with her daughter in late 2010, when she was confronted by 26-year-old Craig Leon Fields at her Smyrna apartment, Cobb County police Sgt. Dana Pierce said. Fields, of Rex, forced his way into the apartment and raped the woman, Pierce said.

After the ordeal, Fields fled in the victim’s car, Pierce said. Several hours later, detectives and undercover agents found the car at a Sun Suites Extended Stay Hotel on Mount Zion Parkway in Morrow, Pierce said. When Fields returned to the car, officers arrested him.

He was found guilty Wednesday of rape, burglary and second-degree cruelty to children.
