(ATLANTA, Ga.) — Thursday, the Atlanta Police Department announced it would be handing out free steering wheel locks, called Clubs, to drivers of Hyundai and Kias. In the past year, a massive spike in thefts of these vehicles was seen. The major factor which seems to be behind it is a viral TikTok trend, displaying how easy it can be to hijack them.
“Kia and Hyundai thefts continue to be an issue in our communities,” the police department said in a press release. “We’ve experienced more than 800 incidents so far this year, compared to just over 70 during the same period last year.”
The locks will be handed out at 3050 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in southwest Atlanta until 3pm Thursday, or until supplies run out.
