Democrat Stacey Abrams on Sunday proposed a hike of minimum salary for Georgia’s public school teachers to $50,000 a year if she is elected governor.
In a series of tweets Sunday, Abrams highlighted key points of her plan over four years, including raising average Georgia teacher salaries to $73,500. She says that would move Georgia to top-10 in the nation in teacher salaries.
To invest in students, we must invest in educators. My plan will:

✅ Raise base teacher pay to $50,000
✅ Raise average teacher salaries to $73,500
✅ Move Georgia to the top 10 in teacher salaries
✅ Support living wages and advancement for education support professionals
“Investing in our students is essential to building One Georgia in which all of us can move up and move forward,” Abrams writes.
Currently, base pay for teachers in Georgia stands at around $39,000.
Abrams’ proposal would raise minimum salaries by roughly $11,000. In 2018 weeks before the election, Brian Kemp pledged to hike teacher pay by $5,000. A record $30.2 billion state budget signed by Governor Kemp this year included the final portion of his promised pay raise for teachers.
Abrams and Kemp will face-off again this November in the election for governor.
