This marks the President’s first trip to Georgia since last January. The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports the visit is also an opportunity for Biden to appear “alongside U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock, who was recently sworn in for his first full six-year term.”

Warnock is the head pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church where Dr. King served as the church’s co-pastor, alongside his father, from 1960 until he was assassinated in 1968.

Sunday’s service is being held on what would have been King’s 94th birthday. “Ebenezer is also co-hosting a Martin Luther King Jr. Shabbat with The Temple in Atlanta on Friday evening, “ The AJC’s Tia Mitchell reports.

On Monday, during the federal observance of the King holiday, Ebenezer will hold the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Beloved Community Service. “Bryan Stevenson, the founder and executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative, will deliver the keynote,” Mitchell adds.

Celebrations and commemorations will take place all across the state of Georgia Monday, as well as in the nation’s capital and beyond.

Many King holiday events are “opportunities for Americans to give back, reflect on the civil rights icon’s legacy or deal locally with racial discrimination in their own communities,” Aaron Morrison, with the Associated Press, writes.

On Friday, a monument to Martin Luther King Jr. was dedicated in Boston, where the leader first met his wife, Coretta Scott King. “In the early 1950s, he was a doctoral student in theology at Boston University and she was studying at the New England Conservatory of Music,” Morrison explains.

He adds that the $10 million sculpture called “The Embrace”, consisting of four intertwined arms, was “inspired by a photo of the Kings embracing when King Jr. learned he had won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.”

Selected out of 126 proposals, the sculpture was reportedly designed by Hank Willis Thomas and MASS Design Group. >> Read more here.
