Henry County firefighters are trying to figure out what caused a smoldering fire Saturday night that destroyed seven homes and damaged seven more.

The blaze started in one home of the Flippen Woods subdivision in Stockbridge and quickly spread to the rest. Fire crews say the blaze jumped from home to home because the houses are very close and connected by a walkway.

Henry County Fire Chief Bill Lacy said firefighters arrived at the scene four minutes after getting the emergency call. By the time they arrived, flames were shooting from the attics of four houses.

Lacy said the 105-degree heat dried out the homes, allowing the fire to spread quickly. He also said firefighters became fatigued in the sweltering heat.

No serious injuries were reported.
