Sen. Ossoff joins US health secretary to discuss insulin price cap, mifepristone legality

(GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga.) — On Monday, U.S. Health & Human Services Sec. Xavier Becerra joined Sen. Jon Ossoff to discuss the $35 price cap on seniors buying insulin.

In a press conference, Sec. Becerra said that his visit was intended to educate seniors about the new laws’ effect on the Prescription Drug Medicare Program. He said that over the 2022 calendar year, over 45,000 seniors in Georgia saved on average between $500 and $600 as a result of the policy.

Although some drug companies have been willing to adjust, Sec. Becerra added that there has been some pushback on the measure from drug manufacturers and prescription companies.

The new law would also provide funds for free vaccines to seniors for illnesses like shingles or the flu.

After a reporter asked a question regarding the recent action on the legality of abortion drug mifepristone, Becerra reiterated points that he’d previously made. He said that the FDA’s approval in 2000 was based on research and evidence, and the safety of the drug has not changed in the years since.

When WSB-TV reporter Richard Elliot asked a follow-up question, Sec. Becerra said “Mifepristone is still legal for use. Mifepristone is still available today, and we are going to do everything we can within the legal process to ensure that that doesn’t change.

“Right now, the judge himself put a hold on his own decision. Even if the judge’s hold were to expire, we’re going to court to appeal the decision, and also to try to stay that judge’s decision until an appellate court or higher court can make a decision.”
