After providing free dental care to more than 1,200 people Friday, dentist in Woodstock are hoping they can see just as many patients Saturday.
More than 1,500 volunteers, including 300 dentists, are providing free dental care at the First Baptist Church of Woodstock in Cherokee County.
The event, organized by the Georgia Dental Association and the non-profit group Georgia Mission of Mercy, will run until 3 p.m. Saturday.
“In this economy there are a lot of people out of work with no benefits. They are in need,” dentist Jonathan Dubin told Channel 2 Action News. “Just because you are down and out, you still need to keep your health up.”
When the free clinic opened Friday, more than 1,200 were waiting in line. Saturday, people started lining up as early as 2 a.m. to see the dentist. Some of those patients were turned away yesterday, but were giving wrist bands to come back Saturday.
The clinic is meant to serve people in need, but organizers do not plan to ask anyone to show proof of income. Services include cleanings, basic root canal procedures and denture fittings. Care will be provided on a first come, first serve basis.
The event has been held in 17 states. Organizers had to raise about $250-thousand to hold the event.
