ATLANTA — Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum is speaking out as residents raise concerns following a series of violent shootings across the city this week.
The latest incident happened Tuesday night in northwest Atlanta, where a triple shooting left one man dead and two women injured. Officers responded to reports of a loud argument and gunfire.
“One age 20, and one age 25 that have been injured by gunfire, we also found a male inside that had been shot, he then passed away shortly,” Schierbaum said.
Police say a possible suspect in that shooting was later taken into custody in Coweta County. The investigation remains ongoing.
Schierbaum said many of the recent shootings share a common factor.
“Almost each of them have a unique connection that is domestic violence, the individuals knew each other and that escalated and gun fire was introduced,” he said.
The chief also warned those involved in gun violence.
“This department will find you, this department will take you into custody and place you before a court,” Schierbaum said.
He added that incidents involving “angry individuals with a gun will lead to a bad outcome.”
Police say another shooting earlier this week at the Lofts at 17th Street left two men and one woman shot. One of the men died from his injuries.
Schierbaum pointed to resources aimed at reducing violence, including programs focused on domestic violence and youth outreach.
“We have a lot of resources around domestic violence, we have our @Promise youth centers that are at play,” he said.
He also said those efforts are contributing to an overall drop in some crime categories.
“There are resources that are working alongside law enforcement bringing down the crime rate which is going to continue to trend down like usual, but individuals that resort to gun violence, we can’t be in every living room and we’re not invited to every drug deal,” Schierbaum said.
According to the latest data from Atlanta police, homicides are down about 33% compared to the first quarter of last year. However, aggravated assaults have increased by about 17%.
The department has also raised concerns about repeat offenders, saying a quarter of felony arrests last year involved individuals who had been convicted of a felony three or more times.
Police are continuing to investigate the recent shootings.
