Communities in Coweta, Heard counties continue massive storm recovery effort

Days after a powerful tornado tore through parts of Coweta and Heard counties, its residents and others continue the massive cleanup that will lead to a rebuilding effort.

From high above, you can see the destruction left on the ground by a reported EF-4 tornado. WSB Radio traffic reporter Mark McKay snapped pictures that reveal a long trail of damage through neighborhoods and the campus of Newnan High School.

Over the weekend, Governor Brian Kemp toured the damage, telling reporters “it is a lot different than anything I’ve ever seen. Just total destruction in many places.” Kemp says the state will do “everything in our power with…state resources that we have to help this community rebuild.”

The storm that tore through the region late Thursday/early Friday included the EF-4 twister. The National Weather Service says winds might have hit a peak of 70 mph. One person died from a “medical emergency” tied to the storm.

Schools in Coweta County will be closed Monday. The district says Newnan High School and Atkinson Elementary will be closed at least this entire upcoming week.
