(WSB Radio)Â A CBS News correspondent covering the political upheaval in Egypt became the victim of a crime.
It happened Friday, February 11, the day Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak stepped down. CBS chief foreign correspondent Lara Logan--shown here in an image provided by cbsnews.com "moments before she was attacked"--was covering the jubilation in Tahrir Square for 60 MINUTES, where hundreds of people were "whipped into frenzy," says CBS, and Logan, her team and their security were surrounded by a dangerous element amidst the celebration.
"In the crush of the mob, she was separated her from her crew. She was surrounded and suffered a brutal and sustained sexual assault and beating before being saved by a group of women and an estimated 20 Egyptian soldiers," says a CBS statement.
After her rescue, Logan was reconnected with her network colleagues, returned to her hotel and flew back to the United States on the first flight the next morning.
She is currently in the hospital recovering.
"Correspondent Logan and her family respectfully request privacy at this time," the statement says.
