Atlanta police and members of Homeland Security have been out in force across the city after the death of Osama bin Laden.

Authorities have increased patrols around major landmarks that could be targets of a retaliatory attack.

“At 8 a.m. in our cabinet meeting, " Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed told Channel 2 Action News, “I asked the police chief and fire chief to work with FBI to make sure we harden targets.”

More officers, including SWAT members, have been on foot around the World of Coke, Coke Headquarters, the Bank of America building, the Georgia Aquarium and Phillips Arena, where the NBA playoffs will be held this weekend.

“I think this is a high day for the nation. I could not be prouder of our president. I think he has displayed great leadership,” said Mayor Reed.

Reed stressed that the next 30 days will be critical.  There is also a increased police presence at MARTA train stations and Hartsfield-Jackson Airport.

“We are now on a heightened alert status,” MARTA Police Sgt. Aston Greene told News/Talk WSB’s Pete Combs. “There is always the potential for someone to want to retaliate."

With the death of Osama bin Laden, Greene says he's been on conference calls with federal law officers and Homeland Security officials.

“It’s not a time for us to rejoice, it’s a time for us to stay focused,” said Sgt. Green.

Combs noticed more cops, K-9 units, bomb technicians and SWAT officers at MARTA stations. He said all are on extra-vigilant lookout for any sign that those loyal to bin Laden are trying to avenge his death.
