With frigid weather ahead, here’s how to avoid frozen pipes

WSB Meteorologist Kirk Mellish is predicting lows tonight in the teens. You need to make sure you protect the pipes at your house.

WSB's Home Fix It show host, Dave Baker says there are some things you can do to avoid frozen pipes.

One of the easiest things you can do is get some insulated wrap to put around your pipes.

Baker also recommends electrical heat tape, adding, “It plugs in and it has a little thermostat so you can set it and when the temperature on the thermostat kicks off the electric pipe, it electrically heats those pipes wherever they are.”

He says one place he sees a lot of frozen pipes is over crawl spaces. Baker suggests to close the vents in your crawl space and stuff them with insulation.

It is a good idea to drip your pipes inside the house, both cold and hot to avoid freezing.

If you have pipes underneath the sink, make sure the cabinet doors are kept open so the warm air from the room can circulate down there and keep them from freezing.

Baker says if you end up with frozen pipes, do not drag out the hairdryer and try to fix it yourself. He says call a licensed plumber.
