Q: Where are all the stink bugs coming from?

Brown marmorated stink bug (stopbmsb.org)

A: They’ve been laying eggs all summer, so the populations have exploded. And as temperatures cool, they’re looking for ways to get inside. Once they’re inside, it really is true that if they’re crushed or feel threatened, they’ll emit a bad smell.

The non-native, brown marmorated stink bug is often the one most recognized, with a shield-shaped brown body. As much of a nuisance as they are inside, they’re even more of a hassle outdoors. They have sucking mouthparts that pierce fruits and leaves, often leaving an area of the plant that will quickly die.

This pest can really cause damage to so many specialty crops here in the U.S. that many universities have come together to compile research on the site stopBMSB.org
