On Air

Q: There’s an area in my yard that’s shaded. I would like an evergreen ground cover that flowers.

What you should know about creeping phlox

A: It’s hard to find the perfect plant that meets all of those criteria: shade, evergreen, and flowering. But let’s put a few out there!

Moss phlox is very pretty and low-growing, but does need more sun than just 2-3 hours to bloom prolifically in spring. Without enough sun, it may thin out. Blue Star Creeper is evergreen as well and is spring-flowering. There’s also Green and Gold, a native ground cover, that is semi-evergreen. A good native that could be used as a ground cover in some situations is foamflower. But it is not evergreen.

Though these would lack the flowers, consider dwarf mondo or an ornamental grass. They’re evergreen and would do fine in that much shade. However, dwarf mondo and a carex, like Pennsylvania sedge, do take time to fill in. Once established, these require little to no maintenance.
