On Air

Q: My hydraneas are riddled with aphids and possibly leaf spot. What can I do now to save them?

Leaf spot on hydrangea

A: That’s definitely Cercospora leaf spot, which is so common given our heat and humidity. Don’t worry too much about it now, as the leaves are going to fall off soon anyways.

But when they fall off, rake them out from under the plants and remove them from the area. Fungal spores live on those leaves and will overwinter there at the soil surface. Early in the spring, when they start to leaf out again, start spraying with a fungicide according to the label directions. Treatments will stave off fungal leaf spot for next summer!
