Former Atlanta Archbishop Gregory to be first African American cardinal

Wilton D. Gregory, former Archbishop of Atlanta, is one of 13 churchmen who will become cardinals in a ceremony November 28. The announcement was made Sunday by Pope Francis from his studio window in St. Peter’s Square.

Gregory will be the first African American cardinal. He served his Atlanta post from 2005 through part of 2019, before he was named as Archbishop of Washington.
