By 2014, all new cars may have rearview cameras.
According to the New York Times, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is about to send that proposal to congress this week. Seventeen-thousand people a year are injured by passenger vehicles backing up; more than 200 die.
Federal regulators estimate it will cost about $200 per vehicle to install the cameras and viewing screens, adding up to $2.7 billion a year, overall.
