Weather-Traffic Update: Closed roads, humid morning for AJC Peachtree Road Race

Wednesday night: Low: 72

Thursday: High: 88

The AJC Peachtree Road Race will be having a direct effect on traffic Wednesday morning.

“Traffic is predictably light, and it takes on a different feel,” said Ashley Frasca, traffic reporter for News 95.5 and AM 750 WSB.

“Folks planning to travel through the city this morning may want to stick with the interstates.”

Use the Buford Spring Connector, Northside Drive or Piedmont Avenue, Frasca said.

Using MARTA is a great idea, but the latest update said most of their lots are already full. This includes Lenox, North Springs, Doraville, Dunwoody and West End. Lindbergh City Center, Sandy Springs and Brookhaven are over half of their capacities.

The main thing people in Midtown on Wednesday will need to pay attention to — aside from a hearty pre-race breakfast — is the multitude of closed roadways.

Tenth Street between Charles Allen and Monroe drives has been closed since 9:30 a.m. Monday and will remain closed through 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Many other roads closed after midnight Tuesday, including sections of Lenox Road, Peachtree Road and Monroe Drive. For a full list of road closures, click here.

As for weather, it should stay in the upper 70s to low 80s throughout the race, but the muggy morning humidity will be hot, Channel 2 Action News Chief meteorologist Glenn Burns said.

“You’ve got to make sure you’re plenty hydrated (Wednesday) morning,” Burns said.

Burns said everywhere north of I-20 should remain mostly dry all day Wednesday, while the south metro Atlanta area could see about a 30 percent chance of an isolated afternoon shower or two.

The temperature should reach a steamy 89 degrees during the afternoon. And the high temperature for the rest of the week should remain in the upper 80s.

The chance of rain will hover at 30 percent Thursday, but it’ll go up to 60 percent Friday and 70 percent Saturday, Burns said.
