ATLANTA — U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock is calling for more artificial intelligence guidelines after discovering AI-generated photos and false stories about himself online.

Warnock says some of the posts showed him with a full head of hair or holding twins while claiming he was a new grandfather. Others made false health claims, including that he had collapsed on stage or undergone cancer surgery.

Warnock says he is in good health and is calling on social media companies, AI developers and Congress to act.

“Social media companies have to move quickly to label this material. Congress needs to act, we need guardrails, we need regulations, we need to figure this out,” Warnock said.

He also raised concerns about how similar AI-generated content could be used around elections.

“What if hours before an election, someone created a page with AI generated images, fake stories about the candidates. How would voters know what’s true?” Warnock said.

Warnock says the issue extends beyond the false posts about him.

“We have a whole lot of work to do where AI is concerned. AI is here; it is a part of our lives. We must deal with issues related to safety and jobs, but this underscores yet another issue: our democracy itself,” Warnock said.
