It could cost more to send packages during the upcoming holiday season under a proposal from the U.S. Postal Service.

USPS is asking the Postal Regulatory Commission for permission to temporarily raise prices for some package products during the peak holiday season.

The proposed increases would apply to Priority Mail, Priority Mail Express, USPS Ground Advantage and Parcel Select.

The Postal Service says the temporary price increases are needed to cover additional handling costs during the holiday season.

If approved, the changes would be in effect from early October through mid-January.
