Two dead, 35 injured in mass shooting at South Georgia homecoming block party

Georgia mass shooting kills 2, injures dozens

VIENNA, GA — An investigation continues Monday morning after two people were killed and 35 others were injured in a mass shooting at a homecoming block party in South Georgia.

The shooting happened early Sunday morning around 1:30am, during a sanctioned block party that spanned four blocks in Vienna. The Dooly County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were on duty and preparing to wrap up the event when they heard gunfire.

Authorities identified the two men killed as 21-year-old Jaquavion Jackson and 23-year-old McCaleb Jackson. Both were found dead at the scene.

Dooly County Sheriff Craig Peavy said 35 other people were injured during the shooting.

“35 additional victims were transported to several regional hospitals for treatment. The victims range from 14 to 51 years old,” Peavy said.

Peavy said the conditions of those injured vary.

“Conditions of the victims at this time range from critical to stable,” Peavy said.

People who were at the block party described gunfire moving through the crowd.

“Luckily I was one of the ones that didn’t get hit with a bullet, bullets were going from left to right,” one woman said.

Another resident described how close she and others came to being among the victims.

“I could have died. The girls that were with me could’ve died. Some people did die,” she said.

The Dooly County Sheriff’s Office asked the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to lead the investigation into the shooting.
