DECATUR, GA — Police and fire crews are responding to a train collision involving an 18-wheeler in Decatur Thursday morning, leaving debris scattered near the railroad tracks and causing traffic disruptions.

According to CSX officials, the collision happened around 8:54 a.m. near the railroad crossing at North McDonough Street and East Howard Street.

The train struck the tractor-trailer, breaking through the trailer and sending barrels that were being transported inside flying across the area.

The truck driver escaped safely before the collision, and no injuries were reported.

Georgia Department of Transportation traffic cameras showed the CSX train stopped on the tracks alongside the damaged truck. Decatur fire officials confirmed that no one was hurt.

Decatur Fire Chief Toni Washington says clearing the scene could take several hours as crews work to remove the debris.

“We’re currently waiting for CSX to come on the scene,” Washington said.

Decatur police and fire crews remain at the scene as the investigation continues.

Dozens of large barrels that had been transported on the trailer were scattered around the area following the collision. Officials have not confirmed what the barrels contained or were made of.
