ATLANTA — As hundreds of Georgia National Guard members remain deployed in Washington, D.C., some state lawmakers are calling on Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp to help them return home to their families.

State Representative Sandra Scott says they want the guard troops to return home before Thanksgiving.

“This is not a partisan issue, it is a family and health issue,” Scott said. “Our soldiers have served their country. Their children and families need them home for the holidays.”

According to Deputy Adjutant General Joe Ferrero, the guard troops are set to return home in early December.

“They are answering the call to serve. Now, leadership must answer the call to bring our families home, Sen. Kenya Wicks said.

More than 500 members of the Georgia national guard are in Washington D.C., officials said.

The guard units scheduled to return home in December are also expected to participate in a comprehensive reintegration program.
