ATLANTA — Republican Rick Jackson conceded defeat to Democratic Gov.-elect Keisha Lance Bottoms following Tuesday’s election, bringing an end to the most expensive governor’s race in Georgia history.
Jackson delivered his concession speech inside the same hotel ballroom where he celebrated his victory months earlier to secure the Republican nomination for governor.
“Tonight the voters spoke and I respect their decision. This was a hard fought election. Keisha Lance Bottoms deserves our congratulations and our prayers as she prepares to take office,” Jackson said.
The billionaire healthcare executive addressed a packed ballroom of supporters, thanking his family and campaign volunteers for their efforts throughout the race.
“Thank you to every volunteer who knocked on doors, made an unbelievable amount of calls, put up signs, sent texts and hosted events, prayed for us and stood with us,” Jackson said.
Bottoms’ victory marks a return to the governor’s office for Democrats in Georgia.
During his remarks, Jackson reflected on the people he met while campaigning across the state.
“Every person and every story I heard touched my heart and will always be carried with me. Thank you, and God bless you,” Jackson said.
Jackson also spoke about his motivation for running for governor and his desire to represent Georgians who feel their concerns are not being heard.
“I knew that a kid who had very little could still build a life of purpose, that is why I ran, to try to make an impact for 11 million Georgians; especially those who feel like they don’t have anyone fighting for them. That work is not over for me,” Jackson said.
Jackson said he respects the decision of Georgia voters as Bottoms prepares to take office.
