POWDER SPRINGS, GA — The city of Powder Springs is moving forward with funding from the federal Railroad Crossing Elimination Grant Program.

The program aims to eliminate blocked railroad crossings and improve rail safety.

Powder Springs is one of four Georgia cities receiving funding through the program, according to officials.

According to data from the Federal Railroad Administration, more than 2,300 complaints about blocked train crossings have been filed with the agency in Georgia since December 2019.

Powder Springs officials recently held an open house to discuss possible crossing closures and launched a second public survey to gather feedback from residents.

Officials say a final report outlining the alternatives is expected to be submitted to the Federal Railroad Administration later this month or in September.

It is unclear when a final decision will be made.
