Driver charged in hit and run that injured Brookwood High student

UPDATE: Gwinnett Police have arrested the driver involved in a hit and run that injured a Brookwood High School student last Friday. The driver, Amanda Simpson, turned herself in on Wednesday.

ORIGINAL STORY:

A Gwinnett County teenager is lucky to be alive after his bicycle was struck by a hit-and-run driver after leaving Brookwood High School Friday afternoon.

Sophomore Myles Bonn was heading west on Dogwood Road and signaled to turn left when a car going the opposite direction swerved and hit him.

“The lady who hit me drove for a little bit and stopped and got out of her car to look and see if her car was okay, and then got back in her car and left,” he tells WSB’s Sandra Parrish.

The 15-year-old suffered a broken elbow that required surgery Monday, a gash to his head and road rash.

Denise Cox was a few cars back and saw it happen.

“At first, I thought is somebody goofing off here, what’s going on? But she crossed the double yellow line and then she just got closer and closer and closer to him on the bike,” she says.

Cox believes the driver, possibly a white woman with blond hair, intentionally hit him.

“I just assumed when she stopped, that she was stopping to help. It never occurred to me she was going to take off,” she says.

At that point, Cox was tending to Bonn and calling 911, so she did not get a better look at the driver or the make of the vehicle she was driving.

Gwinnett Police have few leads to go on other than a gray or light blue mini-van or SUV. The vehicle could have damage to its hood where the bike hit it.

“We’d like to get her identified,” says Cpl. Michele Pihera. “If anybody knows who she is or maybe knows of a vehicle that has damage that is consistent with hitting a bicyclist, call Gwinnett County Police or Crime Stoppers because we need to hold her accountable for this crime.”
