Park hero to be honored by Marietta

It was Halloween and Marietta grounds maintenance foreman Sammy Stephens was cutting the grass at Laurel Park near Marietta High School. As he mowed, he spotted a two-year old boy chasing ducks toward the water. The ducks went in the water - and so did the little boy, who fell in head first, hit a rock and disappeared.

Without a second thought, Stephens jumped in after him.

"I just ran in – phone and everything in my pocket," Stephens recalled. "BOOSH! I jumped in and pulled him out."

"You were going to save this baby and yet, you don't know how to swim?" asked WSB's Pete Combs.

"That's it," said Stephens.

"That makes you about the bravest guy I know," said Combs.

"Or the dumbest guy you know," Stephens laughed. "One of the two."

"You are definitely the most heroic person I've ever met," Marietta Police Officer Dave Baldwin told Stephens. "(You) are definitely an angel."

Stephens is humble. He laughs off his life-saving heroism. But Marietta city officials aren't laughing – they're admiring Stephens and plan to honor him soon for his bravery.
