ATLANTA — Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport has launched new AI technology designed to help travelers sort their trash.

Oscar Sort AI is being used in food courts across the airport to scan items and tell travelers which bin to use.

The technology uses a screen positioned above regular trash and recycling bins.

Airport Senior Director of Sustainability Dr. Quinta Warren said keeping recycling bins free of other waste is important because contaminated materials may not be recyclable.

“That waste does not get recycled and we get charged for it,” Warren said.

Five Oscar Sort AI units are currently operating in the airport’s food courts.

Officials say five more are expected to be installed by the end of August.
