ATLANTA — More than 500 apartments are going up on Atlanta’s Westside at the former Herndon Homes public housing site.
The Legacy at Herndon Square will offer one, two, and three-bedroom apartments, with options for people to rent or buy.
Terry M. Lee, president and CEO of Atlanta Housing, says more than half of the units in the latest phase of the Herndon Homes redevelopment are listed below market rate.
“What you’re seeing today is the opportunity or the regeneration of what Herndon Homes once was,” Lee said.
The Legacy at Herndon Square brings new housing options to the area, with some apartments listed below the average market rate.
Over half of the 201 apartments at legacy at Herndon Square are considered affordable housing options, officials said. Lee says 32 of those units are dedicated to home ownership, instead of renting.
“We’re really looking at how Herndon Homes can be the elevation or the platform to lift our families to economic self-sufficiency,” Lee said.
The development will also include retail space, giving residents access to businesses within the community.
The developers and Atlanta housing are working to put local businesses and a grocery store in the retail space available. Lee adds that will continue Alonzo Herndon’s legacy to help Black families build generational wealth.
