COBB COUNTY, GA — A metro Atlanta man was sentenced to five years in federal prison after being accused of helping cash stolen U.S. treasury checks using a fake ID in Alabama.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Montgomery says Devin Adkins and a woman from Brooklyn successfully cashed stolen checks totaling more than $14,000.

Investigators say police caught on to the scheme by the following day.

When officers attempted to pull the pair over, Adkins sped away, according to prosecutors.

Police say Adkins reached speeds of more than 125 mph before crashing into a light pole. He and the woman were then taken into custody.

Adkins was sentenced to five years in federal prison.
