GWINNETT COUNTY, GA — A metro Atlanta city is looking into creating its own police department.

That is one of the ideas that was the result of a new city committee looking at the future of law enforcement for Mulberry, Gwinnett County’s newest city.

“We would take the existing taxes that would hang for police services to Gwinnett County. Instead of keeping them in Gwinnett County, those taxes would then be transferred to the city of Mulberry to ultimately fund our own local department,” Mulberry Mayor Michael Coker said.

The City of Mulberry now uses Gwinnett County police.

According to Coker, the decision will be presented to voters.

The voters will decide the future of police in the city, according to officials.
